WRITING PRACTICE
Starting in February, students will be asked to type some of their homework summaries into Google Classroom.
To LOG IN your Google Classroom from home:
NOTE: The has been issues with consistency with how Google interacts with different operating systems. If students can't log into classroom, try to log in through drive and then select classroom. If you are having trouble, reach out to me and we can trouble shoot together.
Example of a summary
A summary will consist of at least five sentences about the topic. The sentence should have a capital letter at the beginning and an end mark punctuation. We have talked about these items in class. Students have an example they corrected in class to use as a model.
The paragraph should start with a topic sentence, what the rest of the paragraph will be about, probably the book. Following this should be three details or supporting ideas. The last sentence should wrap up the paragraph.
It might look something like this:
(Introduction) Tonight I read a chapter in a fantastic book called The Witches. (Details) In the story, a boy who goes to live with his grandmother in England. She tells him stories about all different kinds of witches who live there. She tells him how to spot a witch so he can keep himself safe. (Conclusion) I hope I never meet a real live witch!
O R L I K E T H I S
The Giant King is a wonderful story about a boy named Rabbie who likes to carve figures for the people in his town. One day Rabbie goes to visit a nearby village. When he arrives, he discovers a giant who lives in a cave has been rumbling into the village and stealing food. The townspeople hate him. Rabbie challenges them to look at the giant differently. I can't wait to read more about this story tomorrow.
Here's the checklist of what I am looking for:
Five c o m p l e t e sentences
T o p i c sentence
C o n c l u d i n g sentence
at least three Supporting Ideas
Descriptive D e t a i l s
Indent
This should not take more than 10 minutes. A fun way to share responsibility for this work is to have your student read what they have written to you or have you read it back to them. That's also an authentic way to talk about the reading.
(Coming later in the fall.) When writing this summary in Google drive, the expectations for the writing are the same. In addition, students will need to use their technology skills to log in to Google Drive, navigate to their folder, create a new document, name the document, and start writing. Note: The name of the document and the title of the paragraph are two different things.
Example of Biography
The biography will consist of 5 paragraphs; an introduction, Early Life, Accomplishments, Why this person is important, and conclusion. Students have been working on these paragraphs in class. Both the introduction and conclusion only need to be 2 or 3 sentences long while the other paragraphs will be at least 5 sentences. Students will be expected to have few mistakes in spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar. I'm looking forward to reading the amazing finished products.
George Lucas
George Lucas is a great movie maker. He has made some of the most famous movies of all time.
A long time ago in a galaxy not that far away, George Lucas was born in California on May 14, 1944. Growing up, George liked reading comics, watching Westerns on TV, and going to Disneyland. As he grew up, Goerge's interests started to change. He began hanging out with greasers, boys who would slick their hair back and cruise around town. He would spend long hours in his garage trying to make his Fiat into a fast racing car. Life was good for George, but everything was about to change.
After he was involved in a serious car accident, things started to change for George. He went to college and started making films. Some of his first films won awards at student festivals and He knew that he wanted to be a director. In 1976 he wrote a script for a film called Star Wars. It was late getting finished and over budget, but when it was released in 1977 it became in immediate success. Star Wars even won five academy awards.
Even though George is most famous for creating Star Wars, he is important to the film industry for many other reasons as well. His company Industrial Light and Magic is always on the cutting edge of visual effects. ILM made the effects for films such as Jurassic Park possible. They pioneered CGI or computer-generated imagery for film as well. George Lucas has made a huge impact behind the scenes for the movies.
I am so happy George Lucas created movies like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. What would our galaxy be with out him?
